Little Thunder

Little Thunder

Little Thunder lived in a wigwam with his parents in their small Indian village. One day his father,Big Thunder, was leaving on a buffalo hunt.Since Little Thunder was just eleven years old,he was instructed to stay behind and look after his mother.Little Thunder decided to go on a small hunt of his own.He wanted to bring back a rabbit.Little Thunder, like all Indians in his tribe, killed animals only when he needed food or clothes. He had a good hunting bow which had a perfect  curve to it when the string was pulled tight. He had bone arrows which had sharp points on one end and goose feather's on the other end. When Little Thunder came to the forest clearing,he saw grass move.He dropped to the ground and waited. He tested the direction of breeze by wetting a finger in his mouth and holding it in the air.His finger felt cool, and he knew the wind was blowing toward him.Whatever was in the grass would not catch his scent. He was about to let his sharpest arrow fly when he saw a newborn baby fawn.Little Thunder put the arrow in its pouch and moved slowly toward her.The frightened animal was trying to stand on her thin legs when they buckled and she fell down.He didn't mean to scare her when he laughed at the struggling animal. She tried again, but her legs couldn't support her body. The boy walked over to make sure she wasn't hurt.He reached out to her soft new fur.As he was stroking her,he could feel her calming down. Then he felt her rough little tongue lapping at his cheek.Little Thunder Had made a friend.Where were the fawn's parents?Little Thunder searched. He followed tracks leading to the lake's edge.As he was bending down to look closer at the sand,he had an awful feeling. There was blood near the shore and moccasin footprints next to the deer tracks. Then he knew.Fellow Indians had killed the deer for food. The boy ran to the little fawn.He carried the animal to a nearby cave.Everyday he returned, bringing her food and water until she was able to walk on her own. They played games together and he taught her to come to him when he whistled.
Years went by and the young boy grew up.One day,he found the same clearing he had come upon a long time ago.He was chasing a full-grown deer when it turned around and stared at him.Little Thunder was about to take aim when instead,he whistled softly. The deer approached the boy and began licking his cheek! They were reunited! The deer went back into the woods where she still lives in peace.
